Squash Christmas Outing 2014 - 22nd December

Monday 22nd December

A few beers, in a few pubs (or at least in The Eldon), followed by a curry in Shamoli (in the absence of any other ideas). If you would like to eat, please let me know by the end of November. If you just want to come along for a drink, just turn up in the pub. Route and times will be published on the forum a week or so beforehand, so remember to check the website in December for details. As in previous years, I will order a selection of side dishes/rice etc, but I will require your main course choice before the outing so I can let Shamoli have our order in advance

- menu can be found at: http://shamoli-restaurant.com/menu.html

Leagues - and change to American scoring

As the NW counties leagues are changing the way Thursday night inter-club leagues matches are scored to American scoring, the internal league scoring system is being similarly changed. This is to help players get used to a somewhat different way of playing (as those of you who have taken part in the summer cup will know, American scoring does require a slightly different approach), so that when/if they play for the teams, it won't be a shock. Officially, the internal leagues will change next month (October), but there is no reason why this month's outstanding league games shouldn't be played to the new rules. So from now, internal league games should be scored as follows:

  • Best of 5 games (as now)
  • First server decided by racket spin (as now)
  • The winner of every rally gains a point (that's different - currently only server can win a point)
  • The winner of every rally serves to start the next rally, including for the next game where appropriate (as now)
  • Winner of a game is first player to 15 points (currently 9), EXCEPT: if score reaches 14-14, then the game continues until one player has 2 more points than the other- no prizes for the highest score each month, but do feel free to post high scores on the forum!
  • Everything else as now, including entering scores on the website

Squash Club Christmas celebration - Monday 23rd December

Please read the forum to check out details of the Christmas do on Monday December 23rd

f you are on the list but don't now want to eat, or you are not on it, but you do want to eat, let ME know ASAP (although if by chance the restaurant is full, you might be unlucky).

I am going to order a selection of side dishes, rice (half plain and half pilau) and some naan, and include a couple of poppadoms each (1 plain 1 spicy). Please will everyone let me know what main course they would like - ideally BEFORE the 23rd, but definitely before 8.00pm on the night. I reckon the cost, assuming everyone has a couple of drinks, will be around £25 or £26, plus service - say max £30 in total.

The menu can be found at: http://www.shamoli-restaurant.com/menu.html

Meet at the Eldon whenever you like - I plan to get there c. 6.30. For a change we'll go to the Angel at about 7.45, and then the Cross Keys at 8.15, dropping the order off on the way. Food at 9.00.

GUEST FEES - PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

In 2010, the squash club's AGM decided to abolish court fees, raising the annual subscription rate to maintain the club's income. At around the same time, the club's web-site was introduced, which eventually included the very successful online court booking system. Unfortunately, abuse of the club's guest rules by a few members is having  financial implications which, if it continues, is likely to affect ALL of us, as it will almost certainly become necessary to raise the annual sub.

All members are asked to consider whether they have played against, but not paid for, any guests since the abolition of court fees. If you have, please will you make the necessary payments of £2.50 per court using the envelopes that are provided to the left of the black box (just inside the squash area). If you would like to know how many time that you are assumed to have played with a guest then this information is availble upon request.  Please write your name on the envelope, together with the date and time of the court and your guest and place them in the box.

From now on, please use an envelope to pay the fee each time you play a guest - it is vital that you record on the envelope your name, the name of the guest, and the date and time of the game so that it will reconcile with the booking data and avoid further address. You must also include details in the visitors book (located in the same place).

Provided that members follow these rules, we should avoid embarrassing situations, which could include the suspension or expulsion of persistent offenders. It should also remove the need for a large increase in the annual sub, which, if applied, would be detrimental to all members.

Remember that the booking system records those courts where a member has not specified an opponent, or has specified a non-member as an opponent - checks will be made to reconcile the booking system statistics with the guest fees received.

For your information, these are the official Club Guest Rules:

Any member shall be entitled to introduce guests to the Squash Club provided that no person whose application for membership has been declined or who has been expelled from the Squash Club or Main Club shall be introduced as a guest.

The senior member introducing the guest shall enter the name and address of the guest together with his own name, and details of the booking, in a book, which shall be kept at the clubhouse, together with an envelope which should be posted with the guest fee in the black post box by the entrance. A fee will be charged (determined by the Squash Committee). Guests are limited to a maximum of 3 games a year with a senior member only.

Members and officials of visiting teams engaged in competitive activities with teams representing the Club and the guests of members and officials of visiting teams, may be admitted to the premises of the Club, and intoxicating liquor may be sold to such persons by, or on behalf of, the Club for consumption on the premises from the time that they arrive on the premises to the end of the permitted hours on that day.

Christmas Outing Update

At present, the following have said they are coming to eat: Jacko, 4 Daves (Hunt, Moore, Waring and Smith), Keith E, Neil R, Nigel U, Graham T and Evo (probably). So with me that makes 11, rather less than the usual 20. So come on - final deadline is next Wednesday 23rd. After that I will make a provisional booking at Shamoli. Please email me direct by Wednesday (and if you think you have told me you are coming and are not in the above list - or vice versa - please contact me). JC

November/December Leagues

A lot of games still to be played, but I am sure they are all booked! Remember, unless I am told otherwise, anyone not playing any games in November  will be automatically dropped from the December league. At present, I will be dropping Roger Snape (off to the Antipodean sun for a few months), but I will be adding 2 returning players: John Evans and David Moore, plus new member Mark Fletcher.
