Squash Club Anual Dinner 2013

On Friday the 5th April Knutsford Squash Club held their 2012/13 end of season dinner which this year was celebrated by over 30 members and guests.

Steve O'Hare laid on a fine spread of food which in the culinary circles, within which he frequents is now considered legendry.  Outside of those circles it was still only Pea and Ham soup!

A witty ensemble followed by resident compare for the night Dave Waring, who thankfully had found time off from his duties as the public address announcer at Knutsford railway Station

The Trophy presentations were made and Congratulations to Liam for winning the 2012/13 Senior Closed Tournament beating Steve Costello and Gary Cashmore for beating Tony Hindley in the Plate.  As the cups were not claimed on the night Dave Waring has submitted to the Website Editor photos of him holding the trophies.

The respective Team Captains presented a witty account of the season and honours for Players of the Season were awarded:

4th Team – Mike Walton

3rd Team - Tim Slater

2nd Team - Simon Whitaker

1st Team – Chris Smith

The evening would not have been complete  without a call to the Team Manager in South Africa to wish him a Happy 60th birthday.  It was considered rather rude that he did not take the call until we realised that it was 3 in the morning.

After the Low calorie dessert and the sudden appearance of 30 Yeager bombs the party dispersed, mainly by age to the Amber Lounge, Wine Bar and Gerard’s House.

End of season call to arms

We are now coming to the business end of the season and the player availability, if we are to believe, it is not looking good. Please fill this in asap and make life a bit easier for the team captains. PLEASE TAKE NOTE There are no games next week so use the opportunity of Valentine’s day to get credit points for the run in. Our next matches are on the 21st and will feature: A relegation decider for the 1st's home against Crewe who are 1 place below and in relegation spot. The 2nds are away to Alsager 2 who are perhaps the only team that can pip the 2nd's for promotion. A win here may just do it! The 3rd's are away to Bollington who are 1 place above and to give ourselves a fighting chance to avoid relegation it is a must win game. The 4ths are away to AP2 who they closely trail and whilst resigned to just missing out on the top 2 promotion spots, a good win will help them to achieve a credible 3rd spot. Also check out your Player statistics on our website and also your season trend on the NWSL website and make that last big push and give the annual dinner committee a problem, only rivalled by the competition for Sports Personality of the year for those big accolades.

Booking System Upgrade

We're delighted to announce that the booking sytem has been upgraded.

A key factor is that it is now compatible with iPhones and iPads as well as other browsers and mobile devices.

The new version looks a little different but all the main components should be familiar to members.

Current versions of the main browsers are all supported in the new Bookings system.  However, we're no longer supporting some older browsers, such as Internet Explorer 6 (and earlier versions).

Sandbach 2 v Knutsford 2

David Smith, John Evans and Roger Snape joined Steve Costello and Keith Edminson in the seconds this week against Sandbach 2.  Sandbach were looking to avenge their defeat earlier in the season.

John got a good start against Ian Turpin at 4 and was set to take the 1st game, he had the lead until he stopped playing deep and allowed Turpin to attack the front corners, it was then that John at 7-8 down suffered a calf strain and could not continue.

Keith Edminson played Matt Oakes at 2. Keith wasn't put under much pressure by Oakes and soon won the 1st  (9-4). He played the younger left hander around the court closing down on his opponents weaknesses.  Oakes played some good squash at the front and hit some nice volley drops but Keith matched everything he had (2-0). Oakes came out for a fight in game 3 and increased his length and found more winners from the T.  From 2-1 up Keith reasserted his control and exposed more weaknesses; Oakes lost his width and Keith made him lunge and stretch with little reward, 9-0 to Keith and the match was tied.

David Smith at 3 faced Tony Taylor. Smithy challengedTaylorwith his hard hitting and got some good lengths and forced Taylorto play his best squash, any loose rallies and Smithy blasted the ball into the c/c nick by the service box.  HoweverTaylorhad too much variation and didn't get drawn into a slugging competition. ( 9-3, 9-2, 9-1).

Roger Snape next against Mike Mulliner, Rog was another Knutsford player with a good start winning it (9-4).  Mike stormed back using his accomplished style to great effect. Hard to beat on his day, Rog probably gave him too much of the ball and paid for it losing the next two games (9-4, 9-0).  A good come back in 4 though, (3-9). Roger controlling the game and demonstrating some good squash to leave Mulliner out of attacking court positions.  The 5th was super close; unfortunately it went to their man 10-8. Roger fought all the way but Mulliner got the final winners taking the match for Sandbach.

Steve Costello Vs Nigel Scott. Didn't know what to expect from Scott tonight and suffered similar problems to the previous loss at Prestbury.  Steve was reluctant to go forward in the early stages and tried to hold his position in the back of the court. This proved vey ineffective and Scott mercilessly drove the ball down into the side wall whilst Steve was frustratingly trapped behind him.  Having applied no sustained pressure Scott was left free to c/c from the b/h side and Steve being at the back for too long ran into some unforced errors from good positions that on a different night could have led to a better match, not good.  Scott looked sharp throughout winning (9-2, 9-2, 9-1).

19-5 to Sandbach:  Another loss, Knutsford relying on points gained earlier in the season.
